Principal's Message
I have been honored and privileged to join the Longfellow Family this school year. At Longfellow Elementary we are dedicated to the success of the individual student and the motto of Scottsbluff Public Schools, “Every Child, Every Day.” All staff members and the Longfellow community as a whole work together to ensure that every students’ needs are met academically, emotionally, and socially.
Our school theme this year is “Longfellow Elementary: Adventure Awaits” and that statement has proven to be true. We began this school year with a newly remodeled building that boasts a fresh color scheme, brand new furniture, cutting edge technology, and is even more accessible and functional than when it was originally constructed in 1939. In addition, a new playground was installed thanks to the Scottsbluff Public Schools Foundation in December of 2022 and in the Summer of 2023 the building updates will be complete with the renovation of the restroom facilities.
At Longfellow, students are challenged with rigorous curricula that is second to none and accessible to all students. Our teachers are dedicated to differentiating instruction to meet the academic needs of all students through core curriculum, interventions, and individualized instruction. Our staff seeks to empower and inspire students to set and meet goals in all areas and prepare them for middle school, high school, and whatever life throws their way. We want our Longfellow Razorbacks to become strong Scottsbluff Bearcats that impact their community and beyond.
None of the great things that happen here at Longfellow would be possible without the strong relationships built between our staff with students and their families. We strive to hire individuals with strong skills, capable of building great relationships with students through sound classroom instruction, interpersonal skills, and the intangible qualities that make connections with students and inspire them to be their best. In addition, our Longfellow family is bolstered by an active, supportive PTO and Parent Advisory Committee. These entities work to assist with family events, fundraising, parent education, and much more.
Longfellow Elementary also provides opportunities to support the whole child. Our students are provided opportunities through a music program, physical education classes, art, library, and computer classes. We also have a School Counselor/LMHP and nursing staff available to assist students and families. Title I services in Reading and Math are available for our students. Special Education services are also available to students who qualify. We are also one of the first schools in the state piloting the Nebraska Department of Education’s Journey to Inclusion program. Our goal is to ensure that all students have equitable access to grade level curriculum. Our teachers have been, and continue to be trained in the area of “teaching to the edges” so that every student is getting what they need in order to grow and succeed in the classroom.
We are proud of our students, staff, and families here at Longfellow. “Adventure Awaits” each day and we embrace that with a “Razorback Strong” attitude!
