About Longfellow

Longfellow Elementary is a learning community dedicated to continuous growth in student achievement. We strive to ensure all students have access to effective instruction on a high-quality, grade-level curriculum that is tailored to their learning needs. Parents and staff effectively work together to make quality decisions. These partnerships are most evident in Longfellow's Leadership Team, PTO, and many other committees and groups. In addition, the participation of staff and families in school activities such as Parent/Teacher Conferences, Family Nights, and parent volunteers in the classroom exemplify the strength of the Longfellow community.

Longfellow's primary goal is to ensure that all students acquire essential knowledge and skills to become responsible and productive adults in society. Core goals and learning guides have been developed for all subject areas and are aligned with the Nebraska State Standards. Longfellow Elementary follows a rigorous, standards-based curriculum in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Additionally, elementary students receive instruction using strategies to address the needs of our diverse student population. These include Interactive Touch Panel Technology in the Classrooms, 1:1 iPads (K-2) and Chromebooks (3-5), Magnetic Reading and Writing, Wit and Wisdom ELA curriculum, Bridges Math, Inspire Science, Generation Genius Science, Savvas myWorld Social Studies curriculum, Studies Weekly Social Studies curriculum, and multiple SEL curriculums.

The elementary years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-concept and confidence as learners. They are beginning to develop decision-making, communication, and life skills, as well as character values. It is also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes toward school, self, peers, social groups, and family. Longfellow's learning community provides a positive environment that motivates and supports students and families. Working as a team with parents, the school's staff is dedicated to making a difference in children's lives.

Principal's Message

BenzelWelcome to another great school year Razorback! At Longfellow Elementary we are dedicated to the success of the individual student and the motto of Scottsbluff Public Schools, “Every Child, Every Day.”  All staff members and the Longfellow community as a whole work together to ensure that every student’s needs are met academically, emotionally, and socially.

Our school theme this year is “Longfellow: Be A Star Where You Are” as we focus on maximizing every student’s potential while encouraging them to be who they are and shine where they are.

At Longfellow, students are challenged with rigorous curricula that are second to none and accessible to all students. Our teachers are dedicated to differentiating instruction to meet the academic needs of all students through core curriculum, interventions, and individualized instruction. Our staff seeks to empower and inspire students to set and meet goals in all areas and prepare them for middle school, high school, and whatever life throws their way. We want our Longfellow Razorbacks to become strong Scottsbluff Bearcats that impact their community and beyond.

None of the great things that happen here at Longfellow would be possible without the strong relationships built between our staff with students and their families. We strive to hire individuals with strong skills, capable of building great relationships with students through sound classroom instruction, interpersonal skills, and the intangible qualities that make connections with students and inspire them to be their best. In addition, our Longfellow family is bolstered by an active, supportive PTO. This entity works to assist with family events, fundraising, parent education, and much more.

Longfellow Elementary also provides opportunities to support the whole child. Our students are provided opportunities through a music program, physical education classes, art, library, and computer classes. We also have a School Counselor/LMHP and nursing staff available to assist students and families. Title I services in Reading and Math are available for our students. Special Education services are also available to students who qualify. We were one of the first schools in the state to pilot the Nebraska Department of Education’s Journey to Inclusion program. Our goal is to ensure that all students have equitable access to grade-level curriculum. Our teachers have been, and continue to be trained in the area of “teaching to the edges” so that every student is getting what they need in order to grow and succeed in the classroom.

We are proud of our students, staff, and families here at Longfellow. We can’t wait to have you all “walk the red carpet” and spend this school year “being a star where you are!”
